What I teach

• Basic computer use – how to switch it on, control the mouse, etc.
• The internet – browsing, searching and shopping online
• E-mail
• Word processing – Microsoft Word or equivalent software
• Spreadsheets – Microsoft Excel or equivalent
• Databases
• Creating basic websites and blogging
• Digital photography – transferring images to your computer, basic editing and publishing to the internet
• Screen-reading software for the visually impaired – Jaws, Guide, Thunder, etc.

For some of these topics I can provide advanced training in particular software packages – please ask for details.

I can also provide help and advice on installing software and setting up hardware.

About Me

With a mathematics background I have worked in various technical IT roles for the last twenty years. I have developed software applications, databases and websites and provided support to users with various levels of ability.

Having been made redundant I set up my own company in 1999. I have since worked with clients throughout the north east of England and, via the magic of global communications, much further afield. I have provided consultancy, training and software development for both large and small organisations. I particularly enjoy working with charities and helping them solve the challenges imposed by the lack of resources to spend on IT.

Working with such varied organisations means that I have experience of a wide range of software. This includes all the standard Microsoft packages, but also some of the equivalent free applications such as OpenOffice.

In 2008 I had the opportunity to deliver training on behalf of Digital Unite to residents of two sheltered housing schemes as part of their Power to all People programme. I had a wonderful time! It was immensely rewarding to work with people who had absolutely no experience of computers and introduce them to some of the wonders of computers and the internet.

I firmly believe that you are never too old to learn and that if you don’t try you’ll never know what you are missing!

The availability of computers and the internet has provided huge benefits to many people who now have access to a worldwide library of information, on-line shopping, internet banking, etc. I would like to play a part in ensuring that those benefits are available to everyone regardless of age or ability.

Outside of work I volunteer with the RNIB helping users with computer problems in their own homes. Through this I have gained an understanding of the problems faced by blind and visually impaired computer users. I have experience of a number of the specialist software packages available to such users.
