‘An inspirational project’
‘The real benefit of this programme is that it is not just about 7 weeks of IT training. The social development, personal development and general quality of life for many customers have improved dramatically. Support workers have also stressed the positive impact on their jobs. This is a really inspirational project – when it comes to exclusion, the elderly are probably one of the least remembered groups. “It’s like waking up after 15 years” is how one man explained what the opportunity has meant to him.’
Lisa Keneally, Learning and Skills Council monitor of DUCPs in East London
‘The Digital Unite Programme helps us fulfil our obligations to customers’
‘We’re training over 190 older people and 20 of their staff at 15 East London Supported Housing schemes over 2 years. We’ve received just over £230,000 from LSC London East. The programmes was developed through consultation with staff and residents and comprises a flexible menu option based on skills. Learning includes: digital photography, webcams, IT mentoring training. Results include: computer clubs, inter-scheme contact through online messageboard. Benefits include: enhanced independence, self-esteem, improved mental agility, social engagement, counteracting depression.
‘Quite simply, it has changed our older customer’s lives. It has made many unhappy people happy.’
George Baddeley, Community Development Manager, Gateway Office, Genesis Community, Genesis Housing Group
‘Positively promoting and rekindling self identity’, say Scheme Managers, Rother Homes
‘Tenants found the DU course gave them a day of routine and learning that many had not had since retirement. The course gave the basic skills needed to progress at their own speed. Early interest shown in emailing friends, each other, posting comments on the Digital Unite Noticeboard and the Internet in general can only gain momentum as confidence and knowledge increase. Most have found the DU experience extremely enjoyable, this can be illustrated by “bums on seats” at most times of the day at any time of the week. Tenants’ grand-children have also become involved. The Website provides a forum where tenants can share experiences, reminisce or get re-assurance with issues that are important to them. This positively promotes and re-kindles the tenants’ self-identity.’
